The Mobility Centre had the pleasure of hosting 40 second-year nursing students from the University of Waikato. This visit provided a unique and comprehensive learning opportunity for these future healthcare professionals to explore the full range of mobility equipment and services available outside the hospital setting.
Morag, the students’ tutor, explained the rationale behind the visit: “Our students have been on outplacement to hospitals, but we wanted them to see the full range of equipment side of things, as they had only seen what’s available in the hospital environment.”
The visit included a tour of our facility, showcasing:
- Diverse Mobility Equipment: Students explored a wide array of mobility aids and assistive devices, gaining hands-on experience with tools they may encounter in various healthcare settings.
- Multi-Sensory Room: This eye-opening experience allowed students to understand the importance of sensory stimulation in patient care and rehabilitation.
- Multi-Sensory Garden: Students learned about the benefits of outdoor spaces in promoting patient wellbeing and recovery.
This comprehensive tour highlighted the importance of community resources in patient care. By familiarising themselves with a wide array of equipment and facilities, these future nurses will be better prepared to assist patients with diverse needs and to use community resources effectively.
The success of this educational visit has paved the way for similar opportunities. We’re excited to announce that Wintec will be bringing another group of students to the Mobility Centre and Your Way | Kia Roha next month, further strengthening our commitment to supporting nursing education in our community.
These visits underscore the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and healthcare facilities in providing comprehensive training for future healthcare professionals. By exposing students to the variety of equipment and services available in community settings, we’re helping to create more well-rounded and resourceful nurses.
We’re proud to play a role in enhancing the learning experience of nursing students and look forward to continuing these valuable partnerships, ensuring that the next generation of healthcare providers is well-equipped to meet the diverse needs of their patients.
