With Spring finally here, people around New Zealand are collectively stretching out their arms and legs, searching for their sunglasses and venturing out into the warmer weather.
If you’re stuck for good ideas to blow away the cobwebs – check out these activities for Spring fun.
Take your binoculars and go bird-watching at a local bush reserve or park – or even just in your own garden. A sure sign of spring is the birds chirping outside. Attract even more wildlife to your window by making and putting up a simple DIY bird feeder. If you need a rest, while out and about, a cane seat is a good option.
Give your garden a makeover – there’s nothing more satisfying than attacking that overgrown winter lawn and pulling up those well-watered weeds. There are now lots of products to help people with mobility issues to continue to enjoy their gardening such as kneelers and easy-grip trowels.
If you were organised enough to plant some seeds in winter – now you can enjoy cooking your Spring vegetables. Or check out your local farmers markets or supermarket to see what’s emerged. New Zealand is blessed to have definitive seasons so make the most of veggies like asparagus, radishes and artichokes in spring. If you need help with all the chopping and dicing, you can always use an easy slicer.
Continuing with the food theme – don’t wait until summer to have a picnic. Whether you go to a park, stay in your own back yard, a picnic is a great way to enjoy the spring weather. Just make sure you take an extra picnic rug, thermos of your favourite warm drink and keep an eye out for rain clouds. Pack everything into a handy trolley rather than lugging bags or baskets.
Make the most of the extra daylight hours and take an evening stroll. Wave to your neighbours and catch up after the winter months. See who has a new dog to walk – or a new child or grandchild to push around in a buggy! If you’re not sure how far you’ll be going, pack a folding cane which you can always get out if you need a little more stability.
